South West Region SRP meeting -
19th March 2002 — Holiday Inn, Taunton
Attendees: Paul Jarvis (DML) James Giblett (DML) Gareth Thomas (HSE)
Simon Morris (BE) Dan Talbot (BE) Gerald Hudd (SCC)
Summary Action / Action on
1.0 Introductions
1.1 Simon Morris. Currently working as corporate RPA for British Energy,
providing guidance on policy and standards for radiological protection.
Has an underlying interest in the application of standards across the industry.
1.2 James Giblett. A Graduate trainee nuclear safety engineer. Interest
in operational waste management and decommissioning
1.3 Gareth Thomas. HSE radiation specialist for Wales & West. Interest
in improving the standards of radiation inspection within the south-west
by looking at industry best practice
1.4 Gerald Hudd. Head of Scientific Services for Somerset County Council.
Recently set up radiation monitoring program in Somerset. Has a particular
interest in Radon monitoring and is currently the Chair of the Southwest
Radon committee.
1.5 Dan Talbot. Works Manager with responsibility for Hinkley Point
B (Maintenance, Operation & Health Physics). Particularly interested
in training issues
1.6 Paul Jarvis. Senior Safety Engineer covering dose assessments and
health physics issues in safety submissions. Interested in gaining experience
in other industries best practice.
2.0 Reasons for Meeting
It was agreed there is the potential to share standards and practices.
It was felt the Health services need to be present to provide an overview
for the whole of the South West.
3.0 Group membership
Boundaries for the group were set as follows: As far North as Gloucestershire;
As far West as Swansea; As far East as Wiltshire / Dorset; As far south
as Cornwall. To make the regional group viable it will need greater support
than at present. This may be helped by informal networking, SRP lists
and a willingness from individuals say from the Environment Agency, health
authorities and Universities etc. To increase awareness of group, details
of members within these boundaries will be obtained from SRP (P Jarvis).
4.0 Newsletter / webpage
It was agreed that a newsletter would take too much work and that
output from the group may not be sufficient to warrant a regular letter.
A regional web page detailing local events / meetings / issues was considered
more appropriate. Discuss possibility of regional web page with SRP (P
Jarvis)
5.0 Regional groups
Progress of other regional groups (Scotland and North West) was discussed.
Their need for local 'scientific' style SRP meetings was considered to
be greater due to distance from London. The consensus from this meeting
was that the South West group should focus more on site visits combined
with open discussions. Contact to e made with NW group to discuss progress
(S Morris)
6.0 Timing of Meetings
It was felt more people would have been present at the 1st meeting had
it been at a more convenient time. It was agreed that daytime meetings
should be held periodically every 4 months. The next meeting should be
held in June / July.
7.0 Meeting Venues
Meeting at a site of interest to relevant parties was deemed a good
way to ensure continued interest. Combining a visit with a site tour (e.g.
Hinkley Point B / Devonport) would encourage open discussion about practices
used. To encourage interest a site visit to Hinkley Point or Devonport
was agreed. (D Talbot / P. Jarvis)
8.0 Content of future meetings
The majority of attendees expressed interest in the RPA2000 certification
process. An informal presentation on RPA 2000 followed by open discussion
was agreed for the next meeting. It was suggested Cathy Griffiths could
be asked to provide a presentation on good practise in the health authority.
One aim of the group is to share and improve standards. The objective
would be to use presentations at future meetings as a way of opening a
debate and sharing good practice. Simon Morris to provide informal presentation
