Notes for Applicants

Notes for guidance: application for Fellowship doc

1. Categories of Membership

Applicants should aim, when completing the Application Form, to provide as much information as possible relevant to the category of membership being sought.  The categories of membership and the general requirements for each category are as follows:

1.1 MEMBER

A Member must have reached or passed his or her twenty fifth birthday and have a basic scientific understanding, including a knowledge of scientific method, numeracy and a knowledge of basic radiation physics, biological interactions of radiation and radiological protection philosophy.

A Member must demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge of the relevant regulatory framework for radiological protection, together with the ability to communicate scientific knowledge in a written report or paper.

A Member must have at least four years' recent experience in a field with a significant radiological protection content involving the application of professional judgement or the interpretation of varied and non-routine radiological data.

There are two possible routes to admission as a Member:

(i) Graduate Professional

A Graduate Professional should have a degree in science or engineering or other graduate or post-graduate standard or a nationally recognised qualification, of a standard recognised by the Council, together with at least four years' professional experience which includes a demonstrated systematic knowledge of radiological protection, for example, by means of a record of training and experience.

(ii) Mature Candidate

A Mature Candidate must normally have reached a minimum age of thirty five and have at least fifteen years' experience in a field which has significant radiological protection content, of which at least seven years must be directly involved in essentially full time radiological protection work, four years of which must be at a professional level.  A Mature Candidate must also be able to demonstrate a systematic acquisition of knowledge in radiological protection and may be required to attend an interview.  These requirements may be reduced to take account of academic and professional qualifications.

1.2 GRADUATE MEMBER

A Graduate Member must have a science or engineering degree or other graduate or post-graduate standard or a nationally recognised qualification, of a standard recognised by the Council, together with at least one year's experience in radiological protection not necessarily at a fully professional level.

1.3 ASSOCIATE MEMBER

Associate Membership is open to those who are engaged in, or have an interest in, radiological protection and whose admission would be of value or otherwise desirable to the Society in promoting or advancing any of its objectives and activities.  Applicants should have sufficient technical knowledge to be able to benefit from participation in the Society's activities.

1.4 STUDENT ASSOCIATE

A Student Associate is an Associate Member who is engaged in full-time, part-time or sandwich course studies, acceptable to the Membership Committee, in medicine, science, technology or other subjects related to radiological protection and allied fields, leading to a graduate or graduate equivalent qualification.  Other full-time studies, full-time professional or vocational training following qualification, or a period of full-time post-graduate study, of voluntary overseas service or of voluntary social service, may be accepted as a full-time student activity.

2. Part II - Sponsors

2.1 Two Sponsors, who must be Full Members of the Society, are required to complete Part II.

2.2 One Sponsor should be in a position to endorse the record in Part IV concerning training and experience in radiological protection, together with the statement in Part II concerning the effective application of such acquired knowledge.

In addition, this Sponsor should provide a letter supporting the Application.  This letter should endorse the attributes detailed in Part II of the Application Form and should include the Sponsor's recommendation for an appropriate category of membership.

2.3 The endorsement of Sections 1.5 and 2.5 is not essential for Applicants applying for Associate Membership.

2.4 Applicants who have difficulty in finding two Full Members to act as sponsors should seek advice from the Chairman of the Membership Committee via the SRP Administrative Office.

3. Part III - Academic Education and Qualifications

3.1 Please enclose a photocopy of the certification of your highest relevant academic qualification with your Application.

4. Part IV - Record of Radiological Protection Training and Experience

4.1 Applicants should demonstrate to the Membership Committee that a systematic acquisition of radiological protection knowledge has been successfully achieved.

4.2 All applicants, but in particular those applying to be Members, should record in Part IV all relevant courses and seminars attended.

4.3 Details should be provided of all 'on-the-job' or 'in-house' training, together with details of the internal assessment procedure and the results of that assessment.

5. Part V - Professional Record

5.1 It is essential that applicants seeking to be appointed as Members should provide sufficient evidence of four years' professional experience and an ability to exercise professional judgement.

5.2 Mature Candidates should provide evidence of fifteen years' experience in a field which has significant radiological content, together with evidence of at least seven years' direct involvement in full-time radiological protection work.  However these requirements may be reduced to take account of an applicant's academic and professional qualifications.

5.3 Mature Candidates should submit with their Applications a copy of either a Technical Report or a Professional Diary.

6. Part VII - Application and Declaration

6.1 It is essential that Applicants state the category of membership for which the application is being made.

7. Submission of the Application

7.1 Please ensure that all sections of the Application Form have been completed and endorsed, where requested, by the Applicant and the Sponsors.

7.2 Should there be insufficient room for entries in any section of the Application Form please continue on a separate sheet.

7.3 Please enclose with your Application a cheque, made payable to the Society, for the Application Fee of £10.00.  Please do not send any other payment until requested.

7.4 The completed Application Form, together with any additional relevant documents, should be sent to:
