Operational Note - for immediate use

'Radio Wave Exposures - A Cause for Concern?'
A Society for Radiological Protection one-day meeting at Ribby Hall Conference Centre, near Preston, Lancashire, 27 June 2002

Radio wave exposure affects everyone - but some industries and environments are more susceptible to high levels of exposure than others. The explosion in the use of mobile phones has fuelled debate on the possible effects of low-level exposure. The Society for Radiological Protection's one-day meeting on 27 June will look at issues where there could be significant occupational exposure and will examine the impact that public concern about low level exposures has had on research programmes and communications strategies.

The meeting will discuss how exposure to radio waves can be quantified and the development and use of EMF exposure guidelines. Speakers from the telecommunications and aerospace industries will consider how their industries can measure and monitor radio wave exposure and limit the possibility of excessive exposure. The programme also includes an overview of the LINK mobile telecommunications and health research programme, a review of possible biological effects and talks about public perceptions and risk communication.

Accredited journalists are welcome to free registration to attend this meeting. The Institute of Physics' Press Office is handling media arrangements for this meeting, please contact Dianne Stilwell at the Institute Tel: +44 (0)20 7470 4875, Fax: +44 (0)20 7470 4848, E-mail: dianne.stilwell@iop.org if you would like to attend. Further information on specific papers being given at the meeting will be distributed shortly.
