SRP1 (05) - Press release
For immediate use
Cardiff to host international symposium on protection from radiation
City Hall, Cardiff, is to be the venue for an important week-long international
symposium on protection from radiation. The event has been organised by
the Society for Radiological Protection, the UK’s leading scientific society
for radiation safety professionals. Taking place between the 12th and 17th
of June 2005, around 250 delegates from 16 countries will address changes
in the approach to radiation protection, particularly those arising from
the inclusion of stakeholders in decision making about radioactive discharge
management.
This topic is one of a number with relevance to Wales and the Severn
estuary. There will be papers on the Cardiff nuclear medicines factory
and decommissioning nuclear power station sites, including the future use
of Llyn Trawsfynydd. Remembering the effect of the1986 Chernobyl accident
on hill farming in North Wales, delegates will welcome news of a handbook
to guide decision-makers through the available recovery options following
an incident dispersing radioactive material in the environment
Delegates will also hear from the International Commission on Radiological
Protection, who has for the first time published a framework based on “scientific
and ethical-philosophical principles” for the protection of non-human species
from ionising radiation.
The symposium’s final keynote presentation addresses the radiation protection
response to the potential terrorist threat from improvised radiological
devices (dirty bombs).
The Society for Radiological Protection’s Seventh International Symposium,
‘Changes and Continuity in Radiation Protection ‘ is co-sponsored by sister
societies from Germany, Switzerland, France, Holland and Spain.
