Laboratory Design - Who thought that was a good idea?!

07 November 2017

The Francis Crick Institute, London

SRP’s Research and Teaching Committee recently hosted a very successful one-day event, ‘Laboratory Design – Who thought that was a good idea?!’, at the newly-opened Francis Crick Institute in central London. The event took place on 7th November, the 150th anniversary of Marie Curie’s birth and was attended by over 50 delegates.

Speakers from a variety of sectors including University research and teaching, architecture, secondary education and the non-nuclear industry presented on topics which included fume cupboards and ventilation, floor coverings and work surfaces, PET, security considerations and designing with decommissioning in mind. The event provided a great opportunity for delegates to hear about the experiences of other radiation protection professionals and learn from the good practices highlighted during the day as well as some of the problems encountered.

Following this event the Research and Teaching Committee will be producing a new SRP guidance document on Laboratory Design which will be aimed at non-nuclear facilities. If you would like to suggest any topics for inclusion in this guidance or have any other input to its production, please email admin@srp-uk.org.

The Committee would like to thank the Francis Crick Institute for kindly allowing us to use the venue free of charge, the event sponsor Aurora Health Physics and all the speakers who contributed to making the day so useful and interesting.
