Dstl Environmental Sciences Department (ESD) provides the main source of radiological protection advice and support for the UK Ministry of Defence.  The radiological capability comprises two groups, Radiation Protection (RP) and Radiation Detection (RD). The Dstl RPA Body operates mainly under the auspices of the RP Group and this includes management and oversight of the RPA Body.  Dstl is registered to the BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality standard (Reference D) and the Dstl RPA Body conforms to this standard.  The Radiation Detection (RD) Group provides a full service to the RPA Body including provision of equipment and data on equipment for monitoring levels of ionising radiation.  The Group provides a calibration service to many of the RPA Body clients. The UKAS Radiochemistry Laboratory (within the RD Group) Services may be called upon by the RPA Body to assist in investigations and routine monitoring. Additional specialist support to the RPA Body is also available from the RD Group which includes dosimetry, metrology and environmental assessment.  Dstl is part of the Government Interlab agreement. The organisation is based at Alverstoke in Gosport.

Global Dosimetry Solutions, Inc (GDS) has grown to become a worldwide leader in radiation dosimetry services, we trace our origins back nearly 60 years! Based in California, and with offices worldwide, GDS provides service to more than half a million people. Additionally, the majority of U.S. nuclear power plants that outsource their dosimetry services use GDS. Globally, GDS provides the highest quality radiation monitoring services to a wide range of customers including hospitals, medical and dental offices, veterinary clinics, university and national laboratories, nuclear power plants, homeland security organizations, and other specialized industries.

GDS is privately owned by American Capital Strategies. On January 25, 2006, American Capital Strategies Ltd. (Nasdaq:ACAS) announced the merger of three portifolio companies creating a global leader in radiation measurement and protection. Global Dosimetry Solutions Inc. and Imaging and Sensing Technology Corporation with its French portfolio company Synodys Group SA. have now become Mirion Technologies. The merger of three leaders in the radiation measurement and protection industry creates a true global player with leading positions in the nuclear power instrumentation, civil and military defense, and health physics markets.

The GDS full range of service offerings measure ionizing radiation, primarily through film, thermoluminescent, and track etch technologies. Analysis and processing of dosimetry data is based on state-of-the-art dose assessment algorithms and precision processing standards and equipment. GDS is fully accredited to provide dosimetry services through several well-known organizations such as NVLAP, DOELAP, Canada's CNSC, and the UK's Health and Safety Executive. For added protection, badge data are stored in underground archival data retention vaults for easy retrieval should the need occur.

The core of what makes GDS a world leader in dosimetry services is the collective experience of our people - knowledgeable sales executives, consultants, and customer support representatives - unmatched in the industry. In addition, GDS has a dedicated technical group of highly qualified health physics professionals who work closely with customers.

GDS brings commitment and passion to our business and to the dosimetry industry as whole. We extend that commitment to the communities where we live, and are proud of our superior reputation.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is an independent body that protects the health and well-being of the population. The Agency plays a critical role in protecting people from infectious diseases and in preventing harm when hazards involving chemicals, poisons or radiation occur.  We also prepare for new and emerging threats, such as a bio-terrorist attack or virulent new strain of disease.  The Health Protection Agency's role is to provide an integrated approach to protecting UK public health through the provision of support and advice to the NHS, local authorities, emergency services, other Arms Length Bodies, the Department of Health and the Devolved Administrations. The Agency was established as a special health authority (SpHA) in 2003.  On 1 April 2005, the Agency was established as a non-departmental public body, replacing the HPA SpHA and the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) and with radiation protection as part of health protection incorporated in its remit.

The HPA has a large network of approximately 3000 staff based at three major centres (Colindale, Porton and Chilton) and regionally and locally throughout England. There is a small central office based in London. The Agency works closely with locally based colleagues employed within the Devolved Administrations. The Centre for Infections at Colindale is the base for communicable disease surveillance and specialist microbiology. The Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards is based at Chilton and the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response, focusing on applied microbiological research and emergency response, is based at Porton.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has strategic responsibility for the UK's nuclear legacy, and is decommissioning 20 civil public sector nuclear sites safely, securely, and cost effectively, whilst protecting the environment.  The UK's civil nuclear liability covers sites in England, Scotland and Wales, ranging from research facilities to power stations.  NDA will also be given responsibility for planning and implementing geological disposal of the UK's higher activity radioactive waste.

NDA's mission is to deliver safe, sustainable and publicly acceptable solutions to the challenge of nuclear clean-up and waste management.  This means never compromising on safety, or security, taking full account of social and environmental responsibilities, always seeking value for money for the tax payer, and actively engaging with stakeholders.

NDA's Strategic Priorities are to:

Encourage the highest standards in safety, security and environmental management;
Drive hazard reduction;
Secure the funding framework;
Gain the support and confidence of stakeholders;
Achieve more for less;
Develop integrated waste solutions;
Maximise commercial value;
Build an effective industry; and
Create a world class organisation.
