    RPA 2000

    RPA 2000 is a non profit making company set up in the year 2000 by The Society for Radiological Protection; The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine; the Institute of Radiation Protection and the Association of University Radiation Protection Officers (the Societies) solely for the purpose of certifying competence in radiation protection practice.

    Certificate of competence to be a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) under IRR99

    Certification is intended for members of the Societies however it is also open to non-members practising in the United Kingdom.

    Anyone practising as an RPA after 31 December 2004 must hold a valid certificate of competence from an Assessing Body recognised by the HSE.

    The Ionising Radiations Regulations, 1999 (IRR99) require employers to appoint and consult suitable Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) to advise and assist them in complying with the regulations. To be an RPA for the first time an individual must either

    RPA 2000 is such an Assessing Body and assesses the competence of those wishing to practice as RPAs and, where appropriate, issues such a certificate.

    To continue to be an RPA after five years from being awarded a Certificate or achieving a Level 4 S/NVQ, RPAs must obtain a fresh Certificate from an Assessing Body providing suitable evidence that they have kept up to date their knowledge and experience of radiation protection legislation and awareness of technological advances relevant to radiation protection practice.
