Certificate of competence to be a Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) under IRR99
Certification is
intended for members of the Societies however it is also open to non-members
practising in the United Kingdom.
Anyone practising as an RPA after 31 December 2004 must hold a valid
certificate of competence from an Assessing Body recognised by the HSE.
The Ionising Radiations Regulations, 1999 (IRR99) require employers
to appoint and consult suitable Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) to
advise and assist them in complying with the regulations. To be an RPA
for the first time an individual must either
-
hold a Radiation Protection level 4 National or Scottish Vocational Qualification
(N/SVQ) issued not more than five years previously; or
-
hold a valid certificate of core competence from an organisation recognised
as an Assessing Body by HSE for this purpose.
RPA 2000 is such an Assessing Body and assesses the competence of
those wishing to practice as RPAs and, where appropriate, issues such a
certificate.
To continue to be an RPA after five years from being awarded a Certificate
or achieving a Level 4 S/NVQ, RPAs must obtain a fresh Certificate from
an Assessing Body providing suitable evidence that they have kept up to
date their knowledge and experience of radiation protection legislation
and awareness of technological advances relevant to radiation protection
practice.
The documents required by applicants can be found from the links provided at the top of this page. With effect from 1 April 2007 these are as follows:
- Initial certification Documents C, D and E
- Renewal of certification Documents C, and F
