indication of the content.

6. Replies
a. The List must not be used for personal replies.

d. Replies are addressed to the List by default. For personal replies you must change the address to avoid embarrassing yourself and the Society.  Negligent use of the reply facility may prejudice your List membership.

7. Archive
Only List Members can read the archived messages on the web. To view the archive of messages you must register and get a Yahoo! ID and password as set out in Clause 3 above, then go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/srp-uk and sign in.

8. Illegal, Offensive Or Libellous Material
a. You must not send illegal, offensive or libellous material to the List. Messages may be received or viewed in many countries and must not offend in any.

b. Notices of offensive content must be sent to srp-uk-owner@yahoogroups.com The Council of the Society, the Society's judicial body, will appoint appropriate people to administer the List and check for notices of offensive content The Council of the Society will consider and determine the complaint.

c. If on any working day the monitoring cannot be performed, the administrator may select the option "Messages Off (no one can access the Message archives; archiving is suspended)".

d. At the Society's sole discretion it may remove the message complained of from the web (normally by the first English working day following transmission of the complaint).  The Society reserves the right to terminate List membership, at its sole discretion, for List Members whose postings cause too many complaints.

9. Autoresponders
You must not send an automatic reply (for example "out of office") to a message posted to the List. To prevent this happening, you must set your delivery options to "No Mail / Web Only" as set out in Clause 3 above then wait a while for any messages in transit to arrive before you switch on your autoresponder. Automatic replies may cause a mail loop as follows: the reply from your system is posted, your system receives your copy of the posting and sends a second automatic reply in response, and so on.

10. Help
In case of problems not covered by these rules please contact:
srp-uk-owner@yahoogroups.com
giving the email address you used to join the List and details of the problem.

11. Breach of Rules and Guidelines
The Society may, at its sole option, exclude you from the List if in its sole opinion you are breaching the rules or putting the reputation of the Society at risk in any way.

The Council of the Society has approved these rules.

The Society for Radiological Protection (SRP) email discussion list

The SRP email discussion list Radiation protection in the UK (at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/srp-uk) completed its first year of operation in October 2001 with a membership of 520 and 487 postings. The list provides a new forum for communication between radiation protection professionals. Posted messages are distributed directly to the list, giving speed of response and spontaneity. They are archived as web pages. Postings have covered a wide variety of topics. They have included announcements of meetings, events, new publications and new equipment, news, discussion, requests for information and advice, replies, and offers of surplus equipment. The Health and Safety Executive took account of discussion on the list in the review of its Statement on Radiation Protection Advisers.

figure The breakdown of membership by domain of email address is given in the figure. Some 84% of the list members are based in the UK, assuming that the non-national domains (com, net and org) contain the same proportion of UK members as the other domains. Of the UK domains, the academic ac.uk contains the largest number of members, followed by the National Health Service nhs.uk and 'companies' co.uk. An offer by Fred Dawson to arrange the transfer of members of his list Radpro to the SRP list was accepted by SRP Council. Both lists served essentially the same purpose. It is evident that the provision of the list supports the primary function for which SRP is constituted, to promote and advance radiation protection. The list is administered by the authors.
